Join Climate Positive Energy, University of Toronto Entrepreneurship, and Innovation Asset Collective for a panel on developing an effective intellectual property (IP) strategy for commercialization, and hear from researchers and IP experts with real-world experience. This lunch-and-learn session will be hosted in-person at University of Toronto’s St. George campus. Registration is required for this free event.

About the Participants

Jennifer Fraser, panelist

Jennifer Fraser is a business professional focused for the last 25 years on commercializing early stage technology. Whether the work has been for a start-up company, a venture capital firm or a university, the goal has always been the same; ensure promising technologies have the resources and a plan to make it to the market. She received her MSc. In Microbiology and Immunology from Western University in 1994 and her MBA from the prestigious Ivey School of Business in 2002.
While working for Procyon Biopharma, she developed her own inventions for the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. While working for the London Biotechnology Commercialization Centre and Paramount Capital, she performed technology and business due diligence on investment opportunities and built an extensive network of industry experts to advise her.
Jennifer is currently leading a team of excellent innovation and entrepreneurship professionals as the Director of Innovation at the University of Toronto. She sits as an observer on the boards of various university start-ups, is the recipient of the prestigious 2023 AUTM Canada Award, and has Chaired several commercialization committees in the Toronto community.

Samadhan Pawar, panelist

Dr. Samadhan Pawar is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute for Aerospace Studies, University of Toronto (UTIAS), working with Prof. Swetaprovo Chaudhuri on developing sustainable decarbonization solutions for natural gas combustion systems used in propulsion and power generation. He completed his Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in 2018, focusing on the understanding of combustion dynamics and oscillatory instabilities in engineering systems through the lens of Nonlinear Dynamics and Complex Systems Theory. Dr. Pawar has co-authored over 34 peer-reviewed journal papers and has received several awards/honors, including the Rising Stars in Sustainability Postdoctoral Fellowship 2023 from CPE, the INAE Young Engineer Award 2021, and the ISEES Young Scientist Award 2020.

Peggy Chooi, panelist

Peggy Chooi is the Strategic IP Specialist at Innovation Asset Collective (IAC), leading the development of education curricula on IP, data, and privacy, focussing on practical, just-in-time training resources and tools for SMEs. She has more than two decades of combined experience as a Canadian and international IP lawyer, and is also a certified Information Privacy professional. Peggy is passionate about helping businesses develop creative strategies for IP and other intangible assets.

Shatha Qaqish-Clavering, moderator

Shatha is a strategic leader who brings over a decade of experience working in the clean technology, sustainability, and innovation eco-systems. She has experience managing large scale projects including an $85 million government grant program to drive innovative climate change related technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. She has led multidisciplinary teams and executed many commercialization plans and technology development strategies. She is also a mentor at various start-up incubators and accelerators including Cherie Blair Foundation, and Futurepreneur. She is an active panelist and speaker at industry events. Shatha is fluent in English, French and Arabic and has a PhD in Chemistry.
