Food for Thought: Sustainable Systems and Climate Solutions for Food and Farming

Join Climate Positive Energy and SDGs@UofT at University of Toronto Scarborough for an engaging event exploring interdisciplinary climate solutions through the lens of food, farming, and sustainability.

Hear from expert panelists discussing the future of agriculture, food security, agri-tech innovation, and sustainable food systems. Whether you’re a student, industry leader, or changemaker, you are invited to learn how we can collaborate across disciplines to drive meaningful climate action through the lens of the Sustainable Development Goals.

As part of the event, we are pleased to share guests will enjoy an exclusive, behind-the-scenes tour of the dining hall at Harmony Commons – the largest passive certified building in Canada, and largest passive house dormitory in the world.

This in-person event will be hosted by CPE and SDGs@UofT on Thursday, June 12, 12–2pm at University of Toronto Scarborough’s Sam Ibrahim Centre (SICIEEIL) – 1050 Military Trail, 2nd Floor, IA2000, Toronto, ON M1C 1A4. Lunch will be served.

About the Panelists

Adnan Sharif, Lyrata Hydroponics

Adnan Sharif is Co-Founder and President of Lyrata Hydroponics. Lyrata is a developer of a SmartSoil technology platform intended to develop novel artificial substrates for hydroculture. The company’s platform offers eco-friendly solutions that emit less carbon than other hydroponic options, use less water than field growing, and prevent soil erosion, enabling users to save money and reduce their environmental impact with our long-term pricing.

Claire Perttula, Malvern Urban Farm

Claire Perttula is the Urban Agriculture and Food Programs Manager at Malvern Family Resource Centre. According to CBC News, Pertulla spearheads the MFRC’s urban farm, a 0.8-hectare plot of land located in the Finch hydro corridor, which provides over 35,000 kilograms of what she describes as culturally relevant produce to the neighbourhood. The urban farm also operates a hydroponic microfarm, runs programs to teach agriculture skills to youth, provides a community supported agriculture vegetable subscription box and holds weekly seasonal farmer’s markets.

Olivia Doggett, University of Toronto

Olivia Doggett is a PhD student between the Faculty of Information and the School of Environment at the University of Toronto. She is a Climate Positive Energy scholarship recipient and SDGs@UofT 2025 Student Mobility Program Training recipient. Doggett’s awarded research examines the intersection of agricultural sustainability transitions and transnational labor equity by developing worker-centered just transition frameworks for temporary migrant workers in Canadian horticulture.

Shatha Qaqish-Clavering (Moderator), Climate Positive Energy

Shatha Qaqish-Clavering is Executive Director of University of Toronto’s Climate Positive Energy (CPE) initiative. CPE is University of Toronto’s centre for interdisciplinary climate research, and engages more than 500 science, social science, engineering, economics, and policy researchers to transform our energy systems for a just transition towards a net-zero future.
