Climate Positive Energy Summer Undergraduate Research Program

Are you an undergraduate student summer researcher working on climate and sustainability topics? Are you an undergraduate student seeking a summer research position on those topics? Apply for a Climate Positive Energy Summer Undergraduate Research Program award. This award is $5000 and intended for undergraduate student researchers who are underrepresented in research or in their field. We encourage applications from racialized persons / persons of colour, women, Indigenous / Aboriginal People of North America, persons with disabilities, and LGBTQ2S+ persons and others who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas. We will be using EDI strategies that ensure targeted representation of awardees and trainees. We invite award holders to join our Climate Positive Energy network, and participate in workshops, seminar series and networking events with other researchers at U of T. Undergrad researchers will also be invited to present at a Climate Positive Energy Research Day, at the end of the program.  

These awards are open to undergraduate students from all campuses and departments. We welcome a wide range of work that is focused on achieving a just and equitable net-zero future.  

Some examples of research topics could include but not limited to: 

  • Emissions accounting and measurements  
  • Carbon reductions with health and well-being co-benefits 
  • Energy efficiency strategies and technologies and buildings retrofits 
  • Renewable energy and energy storage development and implementation 
  • Inequity in climate solutions and policies 
  • Political and cultural understandings of climate issues 
  • Impact assessment of policies on consumer behaviour and technologies adoption 
  • Climate adaptation and mitigation strategy 
  • Sustainability, climate financing and ESG strategies and impact on climate

Eligibility 

These awards are intended for undergraduate student researchers who are underrepresented in research or their field. We encourage applications from racialized persons / persons of colour, women, Indigenous / Aboriginal People of North America, persons with disabilities, LGBTQ2S+ persons, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas.. Student researchers must: 

  • Be enrolled in an undergraduate program at the University of Toronto. 
  • Have confirmation of supervision for a minimum of 3 months of research from their supervising professor June – August. 
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have a valid student study permit for the full summer work term.
